Cats of Burano
Gold and Grey
Historically, cats have enjoyed a special status as the protectors of Venice against rats and plague. In Venice itself, we did not see as many strays as I was lead to expect. In Burano, however, there was an ample supply.

Houses of Burano
Canon 70-200mm f/4 lens at 200mm, f/8. One of our favorite photographic trips was to Burano, an island in the Venetian Lagoon well known for its vibrantly colored houses. It was a very pleasant place to wander with a camera.

Venice at Night
Canon 70-200mm f/4 lens at 100mm, f/4, 2.5 sec.. Another quiet Venetian scene. The canals are especially calm at night without all the motorboats and gondole.

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 at 75mm, f/2.8. Gondole and a street lamp. I had a wonderful time photographing Venice. For this trip, I tried to take more photos that encorporate entire scenes (instead of patterned close-ups) and give a sense of place, because I believe this is one of the weaker aspects of my photography.
This photo of gondole and a street lamp was taken near the Piazza San Marco with San Giorgio Maggiore in the background. Mike and I never took a gondola ride because they going at the price of 80 euro per half hour. But still, it was fun to watch the gondole go by, and the gondoliers seem rather nice and tolerant of photographers (photo).

Sorry for the lack of updates here in the past several months. My life seems to have been caught in a whirlwind, and lately I've taken so many trips (weddings, graduations, vacation, etc.) that I feel as though I've been away more than I have been at home. For the past two weeks, Mike and I have had the pleasure of being in beautiful Venice, Italy. Naturally, I took many photos, and now that I am settled down at home again, I will be posting again.
But before I post about Venice (I haven't had time to go through all the photos yet), I wanted to share a bit of good news. A few weeks ago, Wiley and Sons released Gravity's Arc, and the cover photo for the book is from the Chiaroscuro December 2004 archives, Newton's Apple.
