Ripples

sandripples2.jpg

While in FL, Visual Field and I discovered a construction site where the wind had carved some interesting patterns into the sand. This was taken close to sunset, as the light was raking over the patterns.

This is really lovely. The lighting is perfect, and even though there's no focus point, it doesn't seem to matter. How do you see these things!? Mind if I borrow your vision for a day or two?

Regarding the DOF, I notice that the top right of the photo is blurry. I think I like that, but I'm wondering if you did that on purpose? Did you try it with the whole photo in focus, and if so, does it look less interesting? I'm trying to figure out what subtle effect is drawing me in here and I'm thinking that maybe the limited DOF is what's doing it...

(P.S. I might get to go to Florida soon, so you can bet I'll be watching your photos very closely for inspiration.)

How on earth do you do this? How do you manage to find beauty in what most of us would have passed by without giving it a second look. Love your blog.

beautiful. i like the contrast of soft wavy pattern with coarse texture and subject. interesting how the height of the sand reflected by the sun determines the color tone from the lightest on top, to dark in the "grooves". nice focus as well, if you had any blur in DoF, you wouldn't get the nice flat 2D feel, like a painting. excellent.

actually, i guess there is some blur at top right, i looked at the left. its not alot and doesnt take away from what i said before.

after your comment on one of my photos, I checked
out your photos....you must be getting a PHD in
"asthetically pleasing patterns". your photos of
patterns and design are wonderful, and this one
in particular demonstrates how well you use the
light to showcase the patterns -jeffl

Vice picture, again

In the Sahara desert, these patterns are called 'barkhanes'. I even like the name :)
