Newton's Apple

An apple and its shadow.
It's cold outside, so you'll probably start to see more indoor photography from me.

2 words: Wow! & How?

Oh come on, you can't just post that and walk away without telling us how you did it, now can you?
Interesting choice of black and white. Seems to lend it some gravity. (Sorry, I totally couldn't resist.)

It's pretty simple really. You have an apple, and it's levitating over a white surface. A little desk lamp placed above was used to create the shadow, and I took a picture of it. Oh, and there might also have been a thin thread and a little clone-stamp involved. :)

Very cool shot. I love the contrasts and shadows here.

Yes, awesome! I don't know how you came up with this, but it's great. Besides the idea I also like how the shadow is the only part of the background that has any detail.

Wow.......love it.

Cool effect, it really seems to be levitating. I think the effect is so strong because you managed to remove any discontinuity in the background. Have you tried with a less textured shadow (using a smooth surface)?

You are so darn good and creative. I ordered my first alien bees and they arrive today, but the more I see your photos, I believe it has got every thing to do with just talent and not equipment :)

Do a levitating cat next! :)

A few responses...
Karenology: good idea, but no amount of thread will hold up our porcine little furbags.
Anand: when I first read your comment, I thought, "Dang, he's ordered alien bees to photograph? I wonder if those sting." Then I looked up what alien bees really are, and wow, I'd really love to have some of that equipement.
Massimo: Ideally, I would have rather used a smooth surface. The texture is somewhat distracting isn't it? But this was the only large sheet of white paper I had.
Posted by: chiaroscuro at December 16, 2004 3:46 PM
Actually.. the texture is what draws me to the shot.

I agree, the texture is great, but the idea is genius :)

May I use this for a promotional flyer I'm creating? It's such a wonderful picture, and it would be great if I could use it.
I'm also wondering if I could tweak it?
