Rainy Days

Rainy Days

This guy's bright green umbrella caught my eye on a rainy day. No PS work on the umbrella, but I did desaturate the pavement to create more contrast and emphasize its color. I also have a slightly different version here, and would appreciate hearing which composition you think works better.

I like more the one posted in the blog. More space around the walking person, it renders better the sensation of walking in a rainy humid day, when you just want to arrive in a warm dry place, but you have still some walk to do before getting there. The alternate version is too focused on the person, less on the act of walking in the rain.

Yes, I prefer the blog version too. But it's hard to explain why. Have you changed the saturation at the second one? The colours look different.

I agree, I like the blog version better. Though the difference is really subtle. Is it just the framing of the shot that differs?

Im gonna differ with the other two above. I like the other one that you didnt post in the blog. I like the randomness to that version and the way you composed that shot better. Both are nice, but the other one is better IMO. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. Posting alternatives and getting responses was a useful exercise for me. I should do more of this. The main difference was that in the alternate, I tilted the buy more, bringing the umbrella closer to center. For me, it makes him look like he's moving faster and will be out of the frame sooner. I also think its a good point that the other version puts more emphasis on him and makes the space seem smaller.

Really great shot. The desaturation works very well here. Good job.

I like the perspective of the second shot but on closer examination his pose looks a little unnatural. He's leaning forwards too much with respect to the ground.
But very nicely done. I just learned about this concept of desaturating a background to make colors "pop". Some folks say it's become too commonplace, but I quite like the effect you've created here.

Like the main version the best. REALLY like it. The simple composition and fabulous umbrella color are great.

Regarding the photo of the green umbrella (Dec 8, 2004); between the two, i liked the primary shot of the umbrella. For some reason the balance between the figure and the sidewalk seems nicer. Thank you for your time.
